THE GOSPEL OF JOHN 1.4 - IN HIM WAS LIFE
JOHN 1.4: In him was life, and the life was the light of men. (ESV) We have been made by and through Jesus Christ, and he is therefore our source of life. Whether the verses say, "in him", or all things were made, "through him", or we say "by him", they all point to the truth that our origin of life comes from Jesus himself. The person who doesn't believe in God or any other source for the origin of life, in effect believes that life on earth came into being by the action of nothing. There would be no subject to the active verb of "came into being". This doesn't make logical or grammatical sense. If we apply this thinking to every other thing that exists in the world, then we have a world that is illogical. But manufactured products do have makers. A wrist watch does have a designer who worked through many precise calculations to bring about its accuracy. If we reverse cause and effect backwards in time we eventually get to what the philosophers call, "first cause". But first cause is only arrived at by the process of naturally revealed logic. This process is beneficial, but it is incomplete and it does not identify the actual personal God who has brought to pass creation. The Gospel of John says it is God, who is revealed in the Old Testament as, "Yahweh", also called "Jehovah" in some translations, who created the universe through his Son, Jesus Christ. I am aware that I tend to go on about Jesus as the Author of the life of creation. But back when I was a young person at the university, I had a geology professor who beat the class up virtually every day, scoffing at the idea of a God who created the universe. He was the first truly hard-core atheist I had ever encountered. On and on he pounded the whole academic year. All his talk of protein precipitating out of amino acids, and the probabilities thereof. But then I had my own moment of insight. He never told me where the amino acids came from in the first place. And then at the end of the year's study, he confessed to the class that he couldn't prove anything of his atheist beliefs. And he went on to say that he would rather believe that aliens on a space ship brought life to earth, than to believe in a Creator God. The absurdity of the statement speaks for itself, but it was oblivious to the need for him to explain where the aliens and their spaceship came from. He got lost before he arrived at first cause, and this never allowed him to go on and discover God, the Creator, and His Son Jesus Christ.
